About

Berkeley High Crew is a non-profit organization established to promote the sport of competitive rowing for all young men and women at Berkeley High School.  Founded in 1967, Berkeley High Crew is committed to the personal, athletic, ethical and academic excellence of each rower as an individual and as a member of a competitive rowing team.

BHS Crew

History: Founded in 1967, supported from the beginning almost entirely by the rowers, their families and friends, Berkeley High Crew is the only public school crew team in the West. Berkeley High Crew rowers have consistently been recruited to top-ranked public and private colleges throughout the US.  Alumni return annually to the Holiday Sprints to renew their ties at the home dock.

Scope: The men's and women's programs are open to all Berkeley High students. Despite the high cost of crew, we intend that no student who wants to row be prevented by finances and provide scholarships to those in need.  The men's and women's teams are currently administered as one team. We compete together and train on the Oakland Estuary.

Competing against community-based teams, Berkeley High Crew fields highly competitive boats in local, regional, and national regattas run by the Southwest Junior Rowing Association, a division of US Rowing Association (USRA). "Jacket" boats medal every year in local and regional events. Racing season spans most of the spring term, but training and rowing begins in the fall.

Organization and Funding: The programs are supervised by a Board composed chiefly of rowers' parents and coaches working closely with the BHS Athletic director.

All parents must contribute liberally of their time, effort and talents to assure the success of their sons' and daughters' hard work. Every Berkeley High Crew season is ultimately a family effort.

School funding covers less than 10% of our annual operating budget.  The rest comes from member dues, individual and group fundraising, as well as private donations. Corporate fundraising goals are under development, targeting several goals: bolstering scholarship funds and team diversity; purchasing equipment; and paying the boathouse rent.
