BHS Crew at Coastal Cleanup + Team Picnic! (September 17)

Over a hundred Berkeley High rowers scoured the shores around JLAC after practice on Saturday, September 17th as part of the statewide California Coastal/Creek Cleanup Day.

Outfitted in neon yellow vests and protective gloves, the team gathered cigarette butts, bottle caps, styrofoam, fast food packaging, cardboard, and newspapers, filling dozens of trash bags with wet, dirty trash.  About 20 of the 100 trash collector-rowers were spared the need to bend down thanks to a set of deluxe trash grabbers provided by the City of Oakland.  (One parent pondered, "If they had these at home would they be more likely to pick their clothes up off the floor?")

A new site, a new season

Welcome to the new and improved BHS Crew website! As a member of our all-volunteer Crew Board, we are continually looking for ways to improve the communication between the coaches, parents, athletes and the Berkeley Crew community. The website improvements make it easy to keep up on all BHS crew activities, whether getting directions to the next race, checking for practice schedule changes or viewing the latest team photos - it is all on the web!

The new site is also great for anyone wanting to find out more about the sport of rowing, and our Berkeley High crew program. You'll learn about everything from team history (over forty years and counting at Berkeley High) and common rowing terms (head race?), to suggested reading (check out the inspiring story of first national women's team, The Red Rose Crew). Anything a new novice rower, coxswain or athlete's parent may want to know.

The new website is still a work in progress, and we are always looking for feedback. Please email suggestions to our webmaster, or to me directly. Click on the Contact page for BHS Crew staff email contacts.

Berkeley High Crew Board

PS. The new racing season starts in February. You can find the schedule in the left-hand sidebar of the home page. Please join us along the shore to cheer on the Jacket rowers!
