Directions to the fire trails above UC Berkeley

The regular meeting spot for the running workout is  up Centennial Drive (the road that goes
past Strawberry Canyon pool complex) - after you pass the pool complex on your right,
look for the next turnoff on your RIGHT,  it's just a patch of dirt with a few cars parked in it,
no signs, but that is one of the trailheads for the fire trail system.

If you're coming down Centennial from the Berkeley hills, then look on your left after you pass
the UC Botanical garden.

A parent's thoughts on running the fire trail in wet weather:

Much of the fire trail in Strawberry Canyon is well protected by
trees, so it is often not as muddy as you might expect.   The men's
team has often run there in the past during rainy periods and
had good workouts without getting drenched

There will be some mud involved, so it's good idea to wear long pants
of some kind to catch splatter.   Shoes will get muddy as well.   My
son has come home with fairly muddy shoes on a few occasions but the
shoes have never been ruined.   If shoes get really muddy we toss them
in the washing machine.  Again, we've never had a problem, but we
always air dry them.

We have found that it's a good idea to have two sets of shoes during
rainy season because they're going to get soaked on some occasions in
the boat or during a workout  and it may take a few days to dry off.
If there is any chance of shoes getting soaked, make sure your rower
has access to several pairs of non-cotton socks.
