Carpools

Carpool Rules

All cars used for carpools must comply with the insurance requirements and be listed in the Automobile Financial Responsibility Certificate form (included in the registration packet). Please be aware that the California Education Code and Berkeley Unified School District stipulates that anyone who drives to or from any school related activity assumes full financial responsibility for any claims of loss arising from such travel.

All drivers must have a current, legal driver's license and be legally allowed to drive other minors in their cars.

Rowers are not allowed to drive themselves or their crewmates to the races. If bussing is not arranged, carpools must be organized for the rowers.

Driver release forms

In addition to the forms included in the registration packet, the school district requires three other forms to allow students to travel in private vehicles to races and other official school events. On these forms, drivers must:

  • Provide vehicle, license and insurance information for each vehicle to be used
  • Acknowledge the requirements and responsibilities involved in driving students in a private vehicle - each driver must complete this
  • Grant consent for minor children to ride in private cars, releasing the school district from liability – please complete a separate form for each child.

The forms are available here and on the Forms page. Please print the forms, complete and sign them, and return them to your son's or daughter's coach prior to the start of race season. Remember to attach photocopies of your driver's license and vehicle insurance card.

No one without these signed forms will be allowed to travel to a regatta or other school event in a private vehicle.  In other words, they won't be able to participate. NO EXCEPTIONS can or will be made. These are essentially like the field trip slips you sign, and the same rule applies - no slip, no trip.

Carpool Procedures

Carpools are not mandatory. They are organized by the carpool coordinator to facilitate attendance to practices. Parents not able or willing to participate can withdraw.

All parents in a carpool are expected to contribute to the driving.

The carpool coordinator will group parents by area for carpools. Parents in each carpool need to contact each other and establish a schedule of trips based on the practice schedule set by the coaches.

The carpool coordinator does not organize student carpools. The students themselves, with their parent’s permission, organize them. Parents of students being driven by other students need to ascertain with the parents of the driver that they have permission to drive other students and are compliance with the above rules.
