2022 Summer Camps
Special Note for the 2022 season:
Given the ongoing situation with COVID-19, fees for summer camps will be fully refundable if it becomes necessary to change the scheduled dates.
Berkeley High Crew’s week-long summer camps
Established in 2009, Berkeley High Crew’s summer rowing program offers local students, ages 11 and up, a chance to try this unique, growing sport with the Berkeley High School Crew coaches and current team members.
This summer, we are happy to offer four week-long sessions. Each week will have the Learn-to-Row camp for novice rowers in the afternoon (11 to 2 PM), and a Varsity camp for experienced Berkeley High rowers in the morning (7 to 10 am). The camp dates are:
Session 1: 6/20-24
Session 2: 7/18-22
Session 3: 7/25-29
Session 4: 8/8-12 (no Learn to Row this week)
LOCATION: Jack London Aquatic Center (JLAC)
Come out and try rowing with us, or explore Lake Merritt Rowing Club’s Summer Youth Rowing program. More information is at the bottom of this page.
Learn-to-Row Camp (11 AM – 2 pm)
This camp provides a fun introduction to the sport of crew. Campers learn the basics from the Berkeley High coaches and also get to meet some of our current varsity student-athletes. This camp will focus on the development of basic rowing skills using rowing machines, our 16-person training barge, and 8-person racing shells.
Our Learn-to-Row camps are designed for new or inexperienced rowers, ages 11 and up. No experience required. Space permitting, rowers are welcome to sign up for one or more camps.
The fee for Learn-to-Row camp is $250 per week. There is a limit of 30 participants per week.
Registering for Learn to Row Camp
Complete the online registration here: Learn to Row
Complete a swim test. Proof of swimming proficiency is required to participate in the camp. Print a swim test form. At a pool of your choice, ask a lifeguard to administer the swim test and sign the form. Bring the form to the first day of camp. Alternatively, swimming tests will also be available at the Berkeley Marina in cooperation with Odyssey Open Water Swimming on Sunday mornings immediately preceding each week of camp. Please register directly with Odyssey for the 10 am swim time slot using the discount code 'student'. A BHS Crew representative will be onsite to coordinate the tests.
See the Forms page to download the Swim Test form.
Returning Varsity Rower Camp (7-10 am)
Varsity Camps are an opportunity for rowers and coxswains with at least one year of competitive rowing experience at Berkeley High to continue developing their skills. They are a great time to work on both sweep and sculling technique and also include a strength and conditioning component. Participation is optional. Space permitting, rowers are welcome to sign up for one or more camps.

In addition to Berkeley High Crew camps ….
Oakland Summer Youth Rowing
Summer Youth Rowing at Lake Merritt provides a great chance to get out on the water. Although run by BHS Crew coaches (and staffed by BHS Crew rowers and coxswains), this is a separate series of camps sponsored by Lake Merritt Rowing Club. These may be attended as an alternative or supplement to the BHS-run summer camps, and provide beginning rowers with the same basic skill set.
