Coaches
Berkeley High Crew is proud to have a talented and experienced group of coaches with deep Berkeley High roots.
Our coaches have completed a variety of coaching education degrees, programs, courses and workshops, and they all hold current CPR/First Aid certification and have passed Berkeley Unified School District background checks.

Marie (Frank) Jones rowed four years at Berkeley High (class of 1997), serving as co-captain her senior year. She went on to row at Georgetown University, where she studied Psychology with a minor in History. Returning to the Bay Area in 2006 after completing her Master’s, Marie pursued a career in Mental Health Counseling for school-aged children in Oakland. Marie returned to Berkeley High Crew as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2010-11 season.

Leon Maurer
Leon is Men's Varsity Coach. In his own words:
After immigrating from Germany in 2010, I joined BHS Crew as a freshman in 2011 and rowed all four years (Class of '15). My senior year I co-captained the team and attended Junior Nationals in the lightweight double. I went on to row for two more years at Orange Coast College, racing at ACRA (club nationals) in the JV8 my second year. I am currently finishing my Biology degree at SFSU. I love coaching rowing because this team and sport gave me a lot of important tools as a developing teenager and I want to help BHS Crew continue to positively influence lives.
