Berkeley High Crew is proud to have a talented and experienced group of coaches with deep Berkeley High roots.
Our coaches have completed a variety of coaching education degrees, programs, courses, and workshops. They all hold current CPR/First Aid certification and have passed Berkeley Unified School District background checks.
Chris Hoeper-Tomich
Boys Novice Coach
Chris Hoeper-Tomich has been leading the BHS Crew Boys Novice team for more than 10 seasons, since the 2012/13 year. He is a BHS alum and rowed all four years at Berkeley High (class of 2008); he continued his education with a degree from UC Santa Cruz. Chris maintained close ties with Berkeley High Crew during his years in college and began coaching at a variety of summer rowing programs in 2010, including Lake Merritt Summer Youth Rowing. Chris brings a wealth of experience to our team and particularly enjoys seeing his crews increase their skills and competitive drive over the course of a season.

Bennett Browning
Boys Varsity Assistant
Bennett is in his second season as Boys Varsity Assistant Coach. He was on the Men's Rowing Team at Cal (UC Berkeley) and before that rowed for Walt Whitman Crew. Bennett set the Concept2 American Record in the 100m in 2023; in 2022, he placed 3rd at the Stotesbury National School Regatta and in 2021 competed at the USRowing Youth Nationals.
