Berkeley High Crew is proud to have a talented and experienced group of coaches with deep Berkeley High roots.
Our coaches have completed a variety of coaching education degrees, programs, courses, and workshops. They all hold current CPR/First Aid certification and have passed Berkeley Unified School District background checks.
Alexis Aiello
Girl's Varsity Coach
Alexis in her second season as Girl's Varsity Coach after coaching our Girl’s Novice team for four years. She started her rowing career during the summer of 2011 at RowLA and continued to row through college. In 2019 she graduated from Sacramento State with a degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis on coaching.
Chris Hoeper-Tomich
Boy's Novice Coach
Chris Hoeper-Tomich rowed for four years at Berkeley High (class of 2008) and continued his education with a degree from UC Santa Cruz. Chris maintained close ties with Berkeley High Crew during his years in college and from 2010-2013 he coached at a variety of summer camps, including Lake Merritt Summer Youth Rowing. Chris has been leading the Boy’s Novice team for more than 10 seasons, since the 2012-2013 year. He particularly enjoys seeing his crews increase their skills and competitive drive over the course of a season.
Leon Maurer
Boy's Varsity Coach
After immigrating from Germany in 2010, Leon joined BHS Crew as a freshman in 2011 and rowed all four years (Class of '15). His senior year, he co-captained the team and attended Junior Nationals in the lightweight double. Leon went on to row for two more years at Orange Coast College, racing at ACRA (club nationals) in the JV8 his second year. Leon loves coaching rowing because this team and sport gave him many important tools as a developing teenager and he strives to help BHS Crew continue to positively influence lives.
