Rowathon 2022 is On!

The Rowathon is the main fundraiser of the year for BHS Crew. The fundraiser will be completely digital this year, and we are asking all crew athletes to participate. We are using an online fundraising platform where each athlete can create their own custom page and send links to friends and family members to ask for their support. The kickoff will be on November 19th, after practice, when we will work as a team to create donation pages. There will also be food and refreshments! In the meantime, everyone should get some pictures together and think about who they want on their list.

Parents: We’re asking you to promote this on your social feeds on Giving Tuesday, which is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. More details to come.

Welcome to BHS Crew 2022 – 2023!

BHS Crew came out of the Covid times like gangbusters, with massive team enthusiasm and participation, and last year went all the way to Nationals competition! This year, with 120+ athletes, BHS Crew is the second largest athletic program at Berkeley High, and is eager to build a new chapter in its 55+ year history. Welcome all athletes and families to the 2022-23 year!

Please note the following:

  • Sign up for TeamSnap: this is the key platform for sending information about crew practices, regattas, and events to all team participants and parents: TeamSnap

  • Come to the All Family Meeting, Tuesday Sept. 20, 7 pm at the M Gym.

  • If you are already on the team mailing list, you should have received a Welcome to Crew email. This has information about team organization, fees, PE waivers, practice schedule and important dates. If you didn’t receive it, talk to your coach!

Summer Rowing Camps 2022

This year we will once again host a summer program comprising four half-day, week-long Varsity sessions and three half-day, week-long Learn-To-Row (LTR) programs. The Varsity program is open to all current BHS rowers (including current Novices, who will step up to the Varsity squad at the end of this season). The LTR program is targeted at middle schoolers and other new-to-the-sport athletes. All programs are at JLAC. Some Varsity participants will be needed to stay on in the afternoon as volunteers to assist coaches with the LTR program. Many athletes take BART to the program. Varsity program assistants meet the LTR participants at the station and walk them to JLAC.

The Scholastic Regatta Nationals 2022 has come and gone! Our California athletes marveled at the green foliage back East and dodged the rain, but the threat of lightning during the regatta did not materialize. Berkeley High sent a record 5 boats to the nationals, with almost half the team (45+ rowers), coaches, and parents attending. The trip, from traveling from SFO to Newark, and then a bus ride to Philadelphia, and back, went off without a hitch.

In the heats, the Boys Varsity 8+ took 4th, Boys Varsity Second 8+ took 5th, and the Girls Varsity 8+ took 4th, but they did not advance to the semi-finals.

But two boats did advance to the finals! The Girls Lightweight Varsity 4x took 2nd in the final, and the Boys Lightweight Varsity 8+ took 3rd. Notably, the boys improved from 4th in the heat to 3rd in the final

Fantastic showing, Jackets!

berkeleyside writes about Berkeley High Crew

Berkeleyside wrote up a long article about Berkeley High Crew, going into the history of the team, on the verge of the team going to nationals. Read all about it, here!

On April 24, the BHS Crew brought home gold in the Scholastic Regional Championships at Lake Merced in San Francisco. Numerous boats raced to the top of their heats, or came in close. Here are some highlights:

  • The Men’s 1V crossed three seconds ahead of SI.

  • The Women's 1V soon topped that with an eight-second lead.

  • The Men’s 2V kept things interesting with a dead-heat photo finish that had the crowd hollering, losing only by 0.3 seconds.

  • The Women’s varsity four and lightweight quad crossed with 20 and 24-second leads, respectively.

BHS Crew will be sending a large contingent, perhaps the largest in crew history, to the Scholastic Nationals at Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey. Go Jackets!

Welcome to Bhs crew 2021-22

BHS Crew is emerging from a year-and-a-half of Covid sheltering in place, restrictions on practice, and no regattas, with more interest and enthusiasm than ever before. Welcome all! This is going to be a huge year for the Berkeley High Crew.

Mark your calendar! There will be an outdoor, in-person information session for novice and prospective novice families at 10 am on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at the BHS Crew Boathouse at Jack London Aquatic Center (see map).

Here are a few things to keep in mind. Detailed information will come soon.

  • Crew is back for the 2021-22 season and looks set to have the largest team in years.

  • The 21-22 season will start on August 30, 2021. Practice schedules will be published soon.

  • We're accepting new novices to join our 45+ men and women varsity rowers.

  • Crew is a no-tryout, no-cut sport. Any BHS student who wants to put in the hard work will get a chance to participate in crew. (Space is not unlimited, however, and is always subject to available resources).

  • Crew is supported by rower fees and donations that support rowerships to make sure Crew is available to all students.

  • Your athlete will need to get doctor's permission to participate in Crew. The health form is here: Forms.

  • Registration, Part 1: School sports registration on Family ID.
Note: Although the site says registration is "closed" and that the Crew season does not start until Spring, actually registration for Crew is still open and we will have a Fall season as well.
BHS Athletics page has FAQs and instructions here:
    How to Register.

  • Registration, Part 2 (you can do this in parallel with part 1 above). Team registration on TeamSnap (see link).
All participants must submit a signed
Participation Agreement which covers, among other things, COVID protocols.

  • Active crew team members will receive PE waivers.

  • Carpools: Parents who drive carpools of crew athletes to practice or regattas must fill out this registration. Remember, students cannot under any circumstances drive other students. They can drive themselves only.
